Have you ever ate your dinner out of a toilet? Would drink from a urinal? If your adventurous enough Modern Toilet is the place for you.
This past December, I had the opportunity to visit the Modern Toilet Restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan. It was a rainy day in Taipei, like most winter days. The restaurant is located in a very cool area called Xining. In the area is a night market and a lot of cool stores. It gave me the same type of vibe as New York with all the lights and many people. Anyways, I put the name of the restaurant in my phone's GPS since this place was on my bucket list to visit. It was easy to find, but also could be hard to miss. The restaurant is located upstairs and I don't think they are handicap friendly. When you walk in they will seat you, but you need to order at the counter and not expect a waiter to come to you and ask what you would like. Their menu was quite large compared to other restaurants I had visited.
One good thing about visiting restaurants that are trendy is that they normally have a good English menu. Some of my favorite things from the menus were their Bubble Milk tea (which I would recommend trying when in Asia), And their coke, which was served to me in a hard Urinal! They also had the option to serve the soda in a souvenir plastic urinal ( like what you would see at a hospital for a man to pee in). I was only carrying a hiking backpack so I didn't have room to bring big souvenirs like that. For my actual meal I ordered the Ham and Cheese stuffed chicken which was served in an actual looking toilet. It was tasty, but the portion size was not very big. I ordered a glass of coffee and it was served in a cute toilet coffee mug. I for sure would recommend this place more for the experience and not its food. The next food I ordered was a gigantic "ice cream". I choose chocolate. It came to me served in a huge yellow squaty potty (Which is what a lot of places in Asia use instead of "western toilets"). I will say, it
looks better than it actually was. The main ingredient was not actual ice cream, it was more of a chocolate snow cone. Then on the side there was a type of ice cream that also wasn't soft serve but more frozen. Then, my favorite part, was the soft serve chocolate scoop on top. (Just so you know it is uncommon to find milky ice cream in Taiwan, so when you find it, enjoy it!) On top of the three types of ice cream.
They also had a small serve of the frozen ice cream that was a much smaller size. I didn't eat that personally, but a friend next to me did and they said it tasted good. One of my favorite things that I
liked about this place was the decor they had all over the place. All the seats were real toilets that had different designed lids. When you sat down you were actually sitting on toilets. This made the whole experience a lot more fun.
I would rate this restaurant a 7/10.
I would rate the food a 4/10.
I would rate the location and experience a 9/10.
The experience is what you come for, not so much the food. Although, the food is not as bad as some other popular unique restaurants I have visited in Asia. I would recommend coming here with a group of friends to have a fun time, not a fancy dinner.
